We love to explore New Zealand by bike. It takes you to some beautiful remote places. No traffic, no people and no internet. Just you, your bike and overwhelming nature. And because of that you need a plan! It doesn’t take much to turn a short trip into an ‘unexpected night out’ in the bush. We use the Outdoor Safety Code from New Zealand Mountain Safety Council to prepare for a save trip. It doesn’t matter if we go on a short trip, or a multi-day bike ride. Mountain Safety Council encourages safe outdoor activities and has lots of information and tips on their website. Especially for mountain bikers they made a real handy brochure you can download on their website or print.
Every trip into the backcountry has an inherent degree of risk. It doesn’t matter if you go on a short or long trip, alone or in a group. These risks can be easily reduced through careful planning and good decision making. Basically, it comes down to these 5 topics.
1. Plan your trip 2. Tell someone your plans 3. Be aware of the weather 4. Know your limits 5. Take sufficient supplies
